HVAC Simulation of a Building Floor


The Client:

An Energy Consulting solution Provider Company based in US.

Objective:

To simulate for HVAC parameters of a building floor using CFD Analysis and hence assess whether the provided forced draft by the vents is enough to attain the requisite comfort parameters or not.

Client Expectations:

Client expected us to provide recommendation based upon CFD Simulation results. Expected CFD Analysis results were pressure distribution, velocity plots, thermal distribution and relative humidity (RH) throughout the building. The project nature was of critical since the floor is supposed to be used to store consumable goods. CFD Analysis is expected to predict the storage conditions for the goods and hence a determining factor for the HVAC designs. The hidden expectations were to select the right size CFD mesh for CFD Analysis, to apply correct thermal loads after considerations of the heat source and heat sink.

CFD Analysis Project Challenges:

The CFD Analysis project expected from our CFD experts to create the 3D model of the floor. Communication was one of the biggest challenges as it required a lot of conference calls between our CFD Analysis Project team and the client to understand the inputs parameters such as heat sources and exhaust locations which are critical to the accuracy of the CFD Analysis. From the simulation point of view, the project was at par with any complex HVAC simulation projects since it involved the use of energy equations in addition to the turbulence modeling.

CFD Analysis Project Deliverables:

A CFD Analysis project report containing the summary regarding the thermal comfort parameters (temperature, Relative humidity) was delivered at the end of the project. The CFD Simulation report included images such as the pressure contours, velocity contours, temperature contours etc throughout the system. Our CFD consultant also included recommendation for improved HVAC parameters in the CFD Analysis report.

We could suggest the location for exhaust vents based upon CFD simulation which resulted into saving of about 6 months of time. We have no idea how much this would convert into USD cost. In addition to the time saved, the CFD Analysis also introduced the client to a new methodology to predict the comfort parameters which they may consider while doing the building designs. Since the CFD analysis also provides a good view of flow and comfort parameters, it helps in optimizing the energy usage for the requisite thermal parameters.
